Jay-Z & Will Smith Partner For “Annie” Remake Starring Willow Smith

27 Jan

It’s official. First, big brother, Jaden Smith, got his opportunity to star in a big movie remake “Karate Kid.” And now it’s kid sister, Willow Smith’s, turn. The 11-year-old officially signed on to star in the remake of the musical “Annie.”

Overbrook Entertainment partners Will & Jada Pinkett Smith recently partnered with Jay-z to develop major motion picture films and one of the current projects will be the re-make of “Annie” starring Willow. According to a press release from Roc Nation, the partnership began over dinner with Jada, Will, and Jay-z, where they decided to co-invest in the successful product line Carol’s Daughter. They continued this partnership as co-producers of the successful Broadway production Fela!, which earned a total of eleven Tony Award nominations last year.

The time is right to bring back Annie to the big screen. Of course, we’re true believers in Willow’s talent and believe she will be perfect in this role,” said Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad of the project. Jay-z added, “The Overbrook Entertainment family and I have a unified vision. We’ve already produced a Tony Award winning play and we’re developing a true superstar in Willow. This venture into film development and production is a perfect next step with teams that are accomplished, creative, and innovative.

Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment has produced films that have generated over $2.5 billion in revenue. Some of the films include Ali, Hitch, Pursuit of Happiness, I am Legend, Hancock, Secret Lives of Bees and the recent remake of The Karate Kid (starring Jaden Smith). Jay-z sampled the classic Annie song “It’s a Hard Knock Life” on the Vol 2…Hard Knock Life album and recently signed Willow to his Roc Nation imprint, so the collaboration seems to be a no-brainer.

Will, Jada, Jay-Z and Beyonce know how to keep that cash rollin’ in….count them coins!
